About

The Institutional Investor RIA Institute is a private membership organization for the nation’s largest and fastest‐growing independent registered investment advisors as well as supporting members from premier asset management firms and providers. Both members and supporting members of the RIA Institute come together at three private annual forums to engage in 1.5 days of intense idea exchange, discussion, and debate. The environment at each forum is collegial and collaborative, and overt marketing by any member is strictly prohibited. The agenda for each meeting is devised by our Advisory Board of RIA executives to ensure the content is created ‘by RIAs, for RIAs.’

This new membership's primary goal is to help RIAs make the investment decisions and practice management choices that will best serve their underlying clients.

Agenda

The 4th Annual RIA Central Investment Forum will focus on the practice management techniques and investment strategies RIAs should understand in order to compete and survive in an increasingly crowded market. Topics for discussion will include the following:

Creating and communicating a unique value proposition

  • Is there a way to differentiate your firm on the investments side, or is financial planning the new (and only) gold standard?
  • Providing best-in-class estate planning
  • Client (and fee) segmentation: more trouble than it’s worth?

Branding and business building

  • How to attract the next generation of wealth
  • It’s not too late to jump on the bandwagon: Social media as a marketing tool
  • How can RIAs move upmarket?
  • M&A: What side of the equation is your RIA on? What is your firm really worth?

Recruiting and cultivating the best talent

  • Where can RIAs look to source the best talent?
  • How can you cultivate young employees within your firm?
  • Lifting out wirehouse advisory groups as a recruiting strategy
  • Are headhunters and/or consultants worth the cost?

Taking a holistic view of RIA technology

  • RIA case studies: overhauling your entire technology infrastructure, from front office to back
  • Cybersecurity: What is the SEC looking for when they come knocking?

The macroeconomic and regulatory landscape

  • How will current geopolitical and macroeconomic trends impact your clients’ portfolios?
  • How (and when) will tax reform change the way you do business and manage your clients’ assets?
  • Where are the investment opportunities outside of the U.S.?
  • The SEC Custody Rule: Implications for RIAs

Investments to give your firm an edge

  • Investment platform strategy
  • Private equity, hedge funds, and real estate: access, opportunities, and risks
